Mid Atlantic Magic

June 3- June 9, 2018

Where you may ask?

The Azores, we say!

Why you may ask?

For the remote beauty, we say!

Said to be a mix between the verdant Irish landscape and the volcanic beauty of Hawaii, the Azores sit in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, awaiting us with beauty, nature, culture and magic.

Come join us on the island of Sao Miguel our home and escapade base for this 6 night, 7 day trip.  Only a 4 hour flight  from the East coast, the Azores islands are bathed in warm and species-rich waters that are influenced by the Gulf Stream. Due to its geographical location and remoteness, the Azores islands have preserved their nature and pureness for many centuries.

The volcanic origins of the islands have created mountains, valleys and volcanic rock formations that are covered in lush vegetation comprising many endemic plant species and bright flowers of all colors imaginable. These picturesque landscapes are further enhanced by captivating waterfalls, lakes inside ancient craters and thermal springs.

We can’t wait to explore it all with you!

Day one – June 3

Welcome to the Azores, our home for the trip is Sao Miguel, the largest in the chain of 9 magical islands.  You will be greeted at the airport by your representative and transferred quickly to our 4 star hotel by the harbor to settle in.  Unpack, take a walk by the sea, or grab a light snack but stay awake as we are only 4 hours ahead of east coast time.  Our Welcome Dinner will give you a sample of the fresh and creative Azorean cuisine.  Now it is time to get a good night’s rest for tomorrow the adventure begins.

Day two – June 4

Rise and shine for our first Yoga session and a fresh breakfast.  Today is our day to explore our home base city of Ponta Delgada.  Dress in your walkabout best as we meet our local Nature guide at 2 pm to discover, on foot, the history, culture and taste of Ponta Delgada.  Our guide will introduce us to São Francisco Square and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Esperança (Our Lady of Hope), home of the image of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres (our Lord of Miracles), responsible for one of the largest religious festivities in Portugal.  We will also visit a Palace, the city gates, a Museum and the local market. You will be free this evening to enjoy dinner and the city but keep in mind tomorrow is a very active day.

Day three – June 5

Rise and shine early for breakfast as we meet our tour guides at 9 am for a full day of exploring the west side of São Miguel. Sete Cidades lake is one of the most famous and legendary lakes of the island. We will have time to go down to the bottom of the crater where we can ride a bike and paddle a kayak in and around the amazing lake of Sete Cidades. This is definitely the best way to enjoy the Sete Cidades environment, feeling the amazing energy and beauty of the place. We will then enjoy a picnic lunch on the shore of the lake. In the afternoon we drive along the south coast and pass by Ferraria where we will find a wonderful hot water sea bathing area heated by an underwater thermal spring, where we can do a bit of Aqua Yoga to stretch out our day.  What a perfect way to end our adventurous day!

We return in time to rest, freshen and nourish as dinner is on your own.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day four – June 6

We kick off the day with Yoga and breakfast.  This is YOUR day to explore, shop, nap, retreat or book a tour of your own design. Save some energy for our evening spa and dinner tour of Furnas.  Our tour guide will meet us at 6 pm and transport us to the spa, where we will visit the Cadleiras Steam (Furnas, Vila da Povoação). Bathe and cure your mind in the hot springs of Poça da Dona Beija while your dinner is being cooked in clay pots buried in the thermal Earth ovens.  Time to eat the  famous Cozido of Furnas under the stars.  We return to our hotel rested and nourished in time for a great night’s sleep.

Day five – June 7

We awaken for breakfast and ready for another day of exploration.  We meet our guides at 8:30 am.  On the water we go for a half day Whale Watch in zodiac boats. During this activity, you will have the opportunity to watch some of more than 25 cetacean species that can be found in the Azores. Although nature offers no guarantees, whales and dolphins are regularly seen during the 3-hour tour, along with turtles, seabirds and other marine life. Before the boat trip one of the tour’s biologists gives us a briefing to explain which cetacean species can be observed, safety measures aboard, how we respect the animals and rules of observation at sea as well as some historical facts. During the tour each passenger is required to wear a life vest.  Rain coats and trousers are provided if necessary. Lunch is in a local restaurant. After lunch we depart on our jeep tour. This wonderful tour combines different road routes in both highlands and flatlands, taking you to the amazing natural reserve of Lagoa do Fogo to enjoy nature at its best. The astonishing views from the top of the crater’s rim are a must to photograph! We then drive you to Caldeira Velha, a warm iron-rich waterfall where you can go for a dip to experience its warm waters. We return to the hotel in awe of the beauty, ready to refresh for a free evening of your liking.

Meals – Breakfast and Lunch

Day six – June 8

Rise for Yoga and breakfast.  With Sao Miguel having the only tea and pineapple plantations in all of Europe, it is a must for our trip.  Today we will travel across the island to tour the Gorreana Tea plantation, growing tea since 1883.  Still using many of the tools from the early 20th century, this fifth generation family owned business shares their cultivating green and black tea.  Then we are off to Santa Barbara beach on the North shore of the island for the raw beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. We finish off the day at the Arruda Pineappele Plantatio, a true living museum of this unique culture in the world. Learn all phases of pineapple growth and shop the Gift Shop for unique treasures to bring home with you.

Tonight is time to say Adeus to our friends and special island at our Farewell dinner. Let’s gather together, eat some wonderful food, reminisce and plan for our next adventure.
