Fluidity

Ah, the images that arise as I think about Fluidity!  Meandering streams, flowing curtains in a breeze, graceful dance in rhythm with the music, smoke curling its way to the sky, water flowing through my tea strainer in the mornings, are just a few of the images that come to mind.

Fluidity implies an unencumbered state that finds its way gracefully.  Flowing with a gentleness that is present and aware, fluidity recognizes the path of least resistance!  As we come to a month of awareness, intention and practice, to emulate fluidity it may help to first look for how it presents itself to you.  How do you recognize it in life around you?  Do you know people who embody it in their lives?  Where do you see it in nature? Finally, how will you physically explore it in your daily yoga practice or life with family, work and friends?

One of the key tenants of fluidity is that it is an energy with no attachment to its direction.  It finds the way without demanding which way.  It has persistence with the grace of acceptance.  It harmonizes with all that is occurring in an elegant dance of yin/yang flow.

Fluidity can also exist in the more subtle ways of both the mental and emotional bodies. Thoughts that flow receptively related to the situations around you would be one way to see how to practice fluidity of the mind.  Look for when or where your thoughts become encumbered or resistive, and find other thoughts that slip around, flow or adjust.  At least begin to notice how you may be attached. To know that attachment may help you find your fluidity flow.

Check into your feelings that represent fluidity for you.  You may find some feelings represent fluidity for you more than others.  Is there a feeling that you cling to or maybe unconsciously repeat that is like a big boulder in your flow?  What feelings may help unstop that flow, and bring back grace and fluidity to your life?

Finally look for how you can fluidly adapt to life in its persistent, consistent changing nature!  Keep in mind grace, as it is a central theme to fluidity. When something begins to “interfere” in your plans, how quickly do you adapt and use fluidity to transition and acclimate to the current situation?  Start small.  Examine.  Observe. Begin your excursion this month on fluidity and see how things may shift in your life, work and relationships.
